We argue that these environments offer an exciting opportunity for collaborative and dynamic interactions that will require us to develop new interaction models. We use instrumental interaction as a framework to guide our approach to allowing users to express interaction using a blend of personal devices and shared multi-surface environments.

Interaction Design: The Mobile Percussionist
This paper presents the user centered iterative interaction design of a mobile music application. The application enables multiple users to use one or more accelerometers in order to simulate the interaction with real percussion instruments (drums, congas, and maracas). The ways through which the accelerometers are held, before and during interaction, define the instruments they represent, allo...
متن کاملDesigning Mobile Musical Instruments and Environments with urMus
We discuss how the environment urMus was designed to allow creation of mobile musical instruments on multi-touch smartphones. The design of a mobile musical instrument consists of connecting sensory capabilities to output modalities through various means of processing. We describe how the default mapping interface was designed which allows to set up such a pipeline and how visual and interactiv...
متن کاملEnhancing Interactive Tabletop Workspaces with Tangible Contexts
In this paper, we introduce our concept of tangible contexts in the field of seamless interaction in shared workspaces between mobile devices and tabletop systems. We model the context as a relationship between a user, the user’s mobile device and objects on the surface of an interactive tabletop system. The tabletop represents the public part of the context and the mobile device embodies the p...
متن کاملVideoPlay: Playful and Social Editing of Video using Tangible Objects and Multi-touch Interaction
VideoPlay is a novel tabletop system for editing video using tangible objects and multi-touch interaction. It targets the unique capabilities of the Microsoft Surface platform which supports high precision multi-touch and physical object sensing and tracking. New interaction techniques are presented that allow content to be downloaded from mobile devices onto the table. Physical tiles represent...
متن کاملInteractive on-skin devices for expressive touch-based interactions
Skin has been proposed as a large, always-available, and easy to access input surface for mobile computing. However, it is fundamentally different than prior rigid devices: skin is elastic, highly curved, and provides tactile sensation. This thesis advances the understanding of skin as an input surface and contributes novel skin-worn devices and their interaction techniques. We present the indi...
